Aesthetically, HP is revamping its Pavilion 17-ab in line with the design look preview on the recent Pavilion Power 15. It swaps the silver hull and raster-line patterns against an entirely black hull with a smooth lid with a white logo and a brushed effect interior with the surrounding white keys. The measurements remain the same and are positioned in the average of its category. Namely, this model is obviously not equipped with a backlit keyboard, it is unfortunate.
Autonomy should be around 6 am to 6:30 am in Internet browsing with active WiFi for a charging time estimated at 1:30. This is a good result that is above average.
A decisive factor in its configuration, the GeForce GTX 1050 dedicated graphics card is a mid-range and latest generation solution. It succeeds the GTX 960M with a gain of about 30% but remains a notch below the GTX 1050 Ti whose high-end performance is of a different level. In practice, the GTX 1050 will allow you to play all the titles in the market in Full HD with a level of details set to "High". But do not consider the "Ultra" level on the last outputs, nor the game in 4K, especially since the weak support constituted by the processor necessarily implies some concessions on the graphical plan.
Because the base of the PC is not swifter, HP preferring to privilege the multimedia dimension of the PC and save autonomy. It opts for a Core i5 Kaby Lake low consumption backed by 8 GB of RAM, which closes the door to applications exploiting the multi-core architecture (video editing, 3D …). Here, all the common tasks are of course supported including web browsing, video playback or the Office Pack and even a little editing. On the other hand, multitasking is favored by 8 GB of RAM in DDR4.
Remember that this PC comes with FreeDos, a utility that does not make the best use of all its capabilities. It will therefore be necessary to install a complete operating system such as Linux or Windows to enjoy a perfectly functional environment.
In addition, the storage does not have the chance to benefit from a dedicated SSD and is based on a standard hard drive of 1000 GB. Its large capacity allows to archive your entire library. Note that an M.2 slot is logically available for anyone who would like to add a SSD later but the bottom cover is securely sealed and it will certainly remove the DVD burner in the maneuver.
The screen is pleased to see with its Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) definition and its matte treatment that visibly reduces glare in a bright environment. With this definition, you can watch YouTube videos in 1080p in the best conditions and modulate the display (juxtaposed windows) without losing clarity. In addition, the slab opts for IPS technology that opens the viewing angles and faithfully reproduces colors. Also count on a brightness in the right average.
Finally, HP did not consider it necessary to dust off the connector that still does not include a Type-C USB port. There are three USB ports (two USB 3.0), a DVD burner, an HDMI output and an SD card reader. The latest generation of 802.11 AC and Bluetooth 4.2 Wi-Fi modules are also on the menu for accelerated wireless data exchange.
Our opinion (November 2017) : The HP Pavilion 17-ab307nf is currently being sold at the flash price of 699 euros at Rue du Commerce and 769 euros at Top Achat . This is a particularly competitive price for its category on our price comparator even though its direct competitors are based on a more powerful Quad Core processor. Keep in mind that you will have to add an operating system.
