direct descendant of the Asus ROG Strix GL502VT the GL502VY inherits the same matte black frame with orange buttons that tend to neon. Finishing and assembly are particularly carefully, the plastic base cover in brushed aluminum, giving the PC a good robustness despite its relative thinness. The connection is the same also with 3 USB 3.0 ports (marked in orange), USB Type-C to 2 th generation (10 GB / s) and two video outputs. The absence of 3 Thunderbolt port can irritate some.
Access to components is facilitated through a hatch and disassembly guide. Note that the GL502VY has two SODIMM slots and no soldered RAM, unlike GL502VT.
Comfortable and accurate, the keyboard is backlit in red and has the same layout as most PC gamer Asus. The touchpad has received some improvements, particularly with respect to the resistance of the click. But accuracy is still a notch below the systems dedicated selection keys.
The display is assigned to a Full HD panel (1920 x 1080) IPS matte anti-glare treatment. It has a brightness and a contrast ratio very satisfactory but only covers 84% of the sRGB space where the GL502VT covered all. Colorimetry is good with a Delta E of 4.5. Moreover, the IPS admits different viewing angles without damaging the color or contrast.
Equipped with the same Intel Core i7 latest generation (Skylake) GL502VT that the tested model inherits the powerful GeForce GTX 980M which included here 4GB dedicated. However, the PC turned all securities market and helps push the details to the maximum while retaining the native resolution of the slab. In terms of performance, the 980M is revealed on average 30% faster than 970M. Compared to GL502VT the GL502VY has a monitor that supports the G5 technology that ensures a better flow. RAM can be boosted by replacing the two bars by 16GB models for a total of 32GB. The presence of an SSD 1TB will delight lovers reactivity where the additional hard disk 2TB (Seagate) allow batteries to store limitless.
Not surprisingly, the sound goes along with the addition of a more powerful graphics card. The fans run continuously but still fairly quiet during basic tasks like word processing, video playback or Internet browsing. Because of its relatively fine structure, the temperature tends to rise but fortunately concentrated at the back of the PC and does not impact performance.
In the absence of Optimus (because of the presence of the G5 technology), autonomy does not reach much more than 3 hours in web browsing with WiFi active.
He obtained the rating of 83%.
